Creating roots

A personal project of portraits of foreigners who have chosen Czech Republic as their new home.

A new place is a chance to start over, to be reborn, to grow, to give back and to be thankful for the opportunity given. Building a base for a better tomorrow: Sow today to harvest tomorrow.
The act of creation is a complex process, being the force, which inspires us to create, as mysterious or as silly that can sometimes be. Our actions define us and therefore, with our mere existence, we shape our new home, neighborhood or country. Making it a new place, re-molding into our own. Two words, one concept. One new home - the Czech Republic.

"Creating Roots" je osobní dokumentární portrétní projekt Carlose Lópeze, který zachycuje příběhy cizinců, kteří si zvolili Brno — a Českou republiku — za svůj nový domov. Carlos, původem z Peru a od roku 2008 žijící v Brně, zná tento pocit z vlastní zkušenosti.

Prostřednictvím intimních černobílých portrétů a krátkých příběhů tento projekt oslavuje odvahu začít znovu: nový jazyk, nová kultura, nová přátelství — ale stejná lidská touha někam patřit.

"Creating Roots" is a personal documentary portrait project by Carlos López exploring the lives of foreigners who have made Brno — and the Czech Republic — their home. Born in Peru and living in Brno since 2008, Carlos understands firsthand what it means to build a new life in a foreign country.
Through intimate black-and-white portraits and short stories, this ongoing series celebrates the courage of starting over: new language, new culture, new friendships, new identity — yet the same human desire to belong.
